Houston (pronounced / hju stən ː / ) is a city more populous the state of Texas and the fourth most populous of the United States . It is the seat of Harris County and has territory in the counties of Fort Bend and Montgomery . It was founded on 30 August of 1836 by brothers Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen [3] along the Bay of Buffalo . It was incorporated on June 5 of 1837 , receiving the name of the president of the Republic of Texas , General Sam Houston , who led the Battle of San Jacinto , which took place 40 kilometers east of where the city was established.
